Nathan Metcalf

Pastor for Youth

Nathan, his adoring wife Sarah, and their 2 sons are a family that enjoys quality time together, a house full of pets and an odd obsession with airplanes. Nathan is a lover of so many things it's hard to define what is tops on his list. Whether it’s an adventure, the outdoors, motorcycles, hiking, cooking, grilling, entertaining, playing board games or just hanging out with friends it all brings the Metcalfs such joy to be able to share life with those around them.

Nathan was raised in a home that did the American Christian thing; they went to church, his parents acted like they loved the Lord and he heard about Jesus at church. It wasn’t until later into his grade school years that Nathan’s mom started really leading them as a family into a deeper committed relationship with Jesus. It was during this time that the stories started to click and Nathan realized that he needed Jesus, he needed His forgiveness of his offensive sin, he asked Christ to be his savior sitting in his family room on a sunny winter morning. Nathan lived with this knowledge and it was truly a genuine, child-like faith. During his late middle school and early high school years, Nathan felt a call to a more dedicated life; one that made the actions of faith his own: serving, being baptized, reading the word, praying, witnessing. Nathan wanted to be used by God to glorify Him through his life.

It was during his senior year of high school that he faced a small crisis of faith and he started to question if he was supposed to be dedicating his life to Christ’s service while at the same time he had other plans and dreams. Nathan began to abandon this call on his life to go into full-time ministry, He was silencing God in his life. Then, in December 2000, he had an accident where he fell 20 feet and fractured his back. He was in the hospital for 10 days, and at first, the doctors were not sure that he would ever walk again. The Lord used this time to “snap him out of it,” he knew at that moment that some of the dreams he felt he wanted would never happen. He remembers saying to God “ok I get it, I am done running. If you want me to do ministry out of a wheelchair so be it, I am yours.” This is when his faith truly went from child-like faith to a deep dedicated faith focused on the eternal glory of Him and His great name in him and through him at any and all costs. Ever since, in his daily life, Nathan seeks to live out his faith to His glory. As thankful as he is for a God who has miraculously healed him, he is more blown away by the same God who chose to save his soul.

After many years of serving in youth ministry Nathan had a period of time where the Lord took him from vocational ministry. During this period of resting and waiting the fire inside for pastoral ministry never died. As the Lord began to stir in him the desire to return to pastoral youth ministry the Lord was working within South Cities Church to move around some positions which opened up a need for a new Youth Pastor. The Lord in his wisdom uniquely brought all the pieces together that on June 20, 2021 Nathan stepped back into pastoral youth ministry, 7 years to the day since the Lord had brought him out of it.
