This is a letter to the churches in a specific place - but it's also meant for us. Why are churches important? What are they supposed to do?
What was this church doing well (vv.2-3, 6)?
(they knew their Bibles, could tell when someone was saying something untrue, and they obeyed what Jesus told them to do even when it was hard!)
They kept doing this and didn't give up. We want to be like this! What was wrong with this church?
They knew what they were against - but they had forgotten what they were for. They had lost their love for Jesus, each other, and those around them.
It's easy to remember all the things that are wrong, but forget how much we love Jesus! And when we forget how good Jesus is - then we will not be loving toward each other either! We want our church to know what is true and to love God and each other so much!Jesus promises the "tree of life" to those who listen to him. He promises this because those who truly belong to him will listen to him when he corrects us.
Is there any sin in your life where you need to listen to Jesus to get some help? Do you try to know what is true and obey him? Do you love others?
If you don't, you can just confess your sins to Jesus right now, and if you believe he died for your sins you can be with him forever and he will keep forgiving you and helping you!
